how 5 seconds can change your day


Hi Reader,

I hope you had a great weekend! Have you ever read The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins?

If not, it's a simple yet powerful technique to help you take action whenever you're hesitating to make a decision—whether it's due to fear, self-doubt, anxiety, or just feeling unmotivated.

I first came across the book a while ago, but recently started listening to it again, and I felt compelled to share this with you because I think it can be an absolute game changer when it comes to shifting habits!

Here’s how it works:

1️⃣ You have an instinct to act—like getting out of bed, making a tough call, or choosing a healthier meal.
2️⃣ A moment of hesitation creeps in.
3️⃣ Count down: 5-4-3-2-1
4️⃣ Physically move and take action before your brain talks you out of it.

Sounds simple, right? But it actually works. Neuroscience backs this up—our brains are wired to resist change, and this countdown interrupts self-sabotaging thought patterns, shifting control back to the prefrontal cortex (the part of the brain responsible for decision-making and focus) (Robbins, 2017).

How I’ve used the 5 Second Rule this week:

✅ Not snoozing my alarm at 4:45 AM (which, trust me, was never a habit before!)
✅ Stopping a negative thought spiral & shifting to more productive thoughts
✅ Taking a real lunch break instead of working through it
✅ Getting off the couch to do my physical therapy exercises
